Indentured

                                                                                                L/M: Kevin Simmons

The (Esus) masts are set and the (Asus) deck is swabbed

And the (Dsus) swab is on the (Gsus) deck I bet.

I am (Esus) lugging luggage to the (Asus) starboard side

Now for (Dsus) many days I (Gsus) shall abide

(C) On the open (G) sea

(C) Sailing, rolling (G) free.

I’m (F) off to a merry (C) new land where the (G) economy is (C) good

And (F) every man is (C) free, as (G) every man ought (C) should

I’m (F) off to a happy (C) new place where (G) I can show my (C) face

As a (F) religious man of (C) contrary beliefs

As an (F) indentured friend who (C) seeks relief

As an (F) English man in a (C) new found world,

If (G) that be the (C) case

The masts have been full for many furlong

But the furs have long been gone and null

Heat is scarce but the shore’s at hand

And we arrive at my new home land

Where I will finally be free

And off the open sea

I’m here at a merry new land where the economy is good

And every man is free, as every man ought should

I’m here at a happy new place where I can show my face

As a religious man of contrary beliefs

As an indentured friend who seeks relief

As an English man in a new found world,

If that be the case

(C) On the (Asus2) shore my  (Dsus) friend waits for (G) me

He (C) calls me a (Asus2) servant, says (Dsus) he owns my custody (G)

By (C) paying passage (Asus2) fees and (Dsus) shoveling out some (G) pence

He (C) has bought my (Asus2) services for (Dsus) seven years (G) hence

I (C) work. I (Am) slave.

I (Em7) don’t get (Dm7) paid.

I (C) try to be a (Am) merry chap

But (Em7) I just get a (Dm7) good rap

(C) On my bloody (G) flesh

It’s (C) turning into (G) mesh

But my (C) time is through

I’m (Am) free indeed

This (Em7) happy land is all to me

It’s (Dm7) true

This (C) land holds nothing (G) special for (Asus2) me

Or (F) you.

Take me (C) back

Take me (F) back

Back to a merry old land where the economy is good

And every man is free, to the extent that a man should

Back to a happy old place where I can show my face

As an English man in an English world,

Let that be my case
